Scoring Key

The scoring key determines how Sailboat Racing matches race entries across multiple races within a series. This is essential for building accurate series standings - it tells the system which entries in different races belong to the same competitor.

How It Works

When calculating series standings, Sailboat Racing groups race entries together based on the scoring key fields. Two entries in different races are considered the same competitor if their scoring key fields match.

Available Scoring Key Fields

Field Description
Class Boat class name (e.g. "Laser")
Sail Number The boat's sail number
Helm Helmsman's name
Crew Crew member's name
Tally A tally or entry number
Series Entry ID A system-generated unique entry identifier

Common Configurations

Class + Sail Number (Default)

The most common setup for club racing. Entries are matched by boat class and sail number. This works well when the same boat races each week, even if different people helm it.

Helm

Match by helmsman name only. Use this when sailors may change boats between races.

Helm + Crew

Match by both helm and crew. Use this for team-based scoring where the specific pairing matters.

Series Entry ID

The most precise matching - each entry is explicitly linked. Use this when you want full manual control over which entries are grouped together.

Choosing the Right Key

Scenario Recommended Key
Same boat each week, same helm Class + Sail Number
Sailors swap boats occasionally Helm
Double-handed series, same pairs Helm + Crew
Complex entries, manual control needed Series Entry ID

Configuring the Scoring Key

Set the scoring key when configuring scoring for a series. If you change it mid-series, standings will be recalculated.
